Custom Drawn Shapes

Precision Drawn Metal Profiles for Tight-Tolerance Applications

DEECO Metals supplies custom drawn shapes in brass, bronze, copper, steel, and stainless steel for applications that require tight tolerances, improved mechanical properties, straightness, repeatability, and smooth surface finish.

Drawn shapes are often selected when a standard extrusion, bar, or rolled shape does not provide the level of dimensional control, surface quality, or profile consistency required for the application.

Our team works with customers to review part drawings, profile requirements, alloy options, tolerance needs, surface expectations, quantities, and end-use applications to help identify the right sourcing solution.

Why Choose Cold Drawn Shapes?

Cold drawing is a metal forming process that pulls material through a precision die to achieve a more controlled cross-section. This process can improve dimensional accuracy, surface finish, straightness, and mechanical properties.

Cold drawn shapes can provide several advantages for precision applications, including:

  • High precision and tight tolerances for exact cross-sectional profiles with minimal variation.
  • Enhanced strength and hardness through the cold drawing process.
  • Smooth surface finish that may reduce the need for additional machining in certain applications.
  • Improved straightness and repeatability for applications where consistency matters.
  • Custom designs and alloys engineered to match customer specifications and performance requirements.

For applications where profile consistency, surface quality, and dimensional control are important, drawn shapes can offer a practical solution.

Materials Available

DEECO Metals supplies custom drawn shapes in a variety of metals and alloys to support different application requirements.

Material selection depends on the application, required tolerances, strength, hardness, corrosion resistance, appearance, machinability, surface finish, and downstream processing needs.

Custom Profiles Made to Your Specifications

Drawn shapes can be produced in a wide range of custom cross-sections, depending on material, profile complexity, size, tolerance requirements, and production needs.

Common profile types may include:

  • Custom bars and rods
  • Specialty channels
  • Flat, square, and rectangular profiles
  • Keyed or notched shapes
  • Decorative and functional profiles
  • Precision shapes for machined components
  • Custom profiles for assemblies and hardware

Whether you are developing a new custom profile or looking for an alternate source for an existing shape, DEECO Metals can help review your requirements and discuss available options.

Common Applications for Drawn Shapes

Custom drawn shapes are used across a wide range of industries and applications where dimensional consistency, straightness, surface finish, and repeatability are important.

Common applications include:

  • Architectural and decorative profiles, including trim, railings, framing, and ornamental shapes
  • Door and window manufacturing, including reinforcements, locks, channels, tracks, and guides
  • Door lock hardware and security components
  • Glazing beads and specialty channels
  • Precision mechanical components
  • Marine and industrial components requiring durable profiles
  • Machined components requiring repeatable dimensions
  • Decorative and functional metal profiles

If your application requires a custom profile with close tolerances and reliable repeatability, DEECO Metals can help review your project.

Additional Notes About Drawn Metal Products

  1. Most extruded shape tolerances are acceptable as produced. However, if a shape requires tighter tolerances, drawing may be recommended.
  2. Custom drawn metal profile example Custom-engineered drawn shapes can be supplied in the following tempers:
    • Full Soft: 060
    • Quarter Hard: H01
    • Half Hard: H02
    • Full Hard: H04
    • Annealed or stress relieved options may also be available
  3. Some materials can be supplied in a pickled or bright condition upon request.
  4. DEECO Metals offers copper alloys to ASTM or CDA specifications.
  5. DEECO Metals offers steel and stainless steel to ASTM, AISI, and ASME SA specifications.
  6. Drawn shapes may be supplied as precision-cut pieces, coils, or straight lengths depending on the application and material.
  7. Special alloys in rod and bar form may also be available.

Since 1987, DEECO Metals has helped customers source custom metal shapes and components tailored to engineering, manufacturing, architectural, and industrial requirements.

Drawn Shapes vs. Extruded Shapes

Extruded shapes and drawn shapes are both valuable manufacturing options, but they are often selected for different reasons.

Extrusions are commonly used for custom profiles and larger production requirements where shape flexibility and material efficiency are important. Drawn shapes are often used when tighter tolerances, improved surface finish, better straightness, and enhanced mechanical properties are required.

In some applications, an extrusion may be used as the starting point and then drawn to improve dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and mechanical performance.

DEECO Metals can help customers review the part design, material, tolerance requirements, production needs, and end-use application to determine whether an extruded shape, drawn shape, or another manufacturing process is the best fit.

What to Send With Your Drawn Shapes RFQ

To help us review your drawn shape requirement, please provide as much project information as possible.

Helpful information includes:

  • Part drawing or cross-section
  • Material or alloy requirement
  • Dimensional tolerances
  • Surface finish expectations
  • Temper or mechanical property requirements, if applicable
  • Estimated annual usage or order quantity
  • Required lengths or cut-to-size needs
  • End-use application
  • Packaging or delivery requirements

The more information we receive at the beginning of the inquiry, the better we can evaluate the application and help determine the most practical sourcing path.

Quality-Focused Sourcing and Support

DEECO Metals works with customers to review drawings, specifications, material requirements, tolerances, finish expectations, packaging, and delivery needs before and during the order process.

For new custom drawn shapes, first article samples or prototypes may be provided when required before full production begins. This helps customers review the profile, dimensions, surface finish, and application requirements before moving forward with larger production quantities.

Our goal is to help customers source custom drawn shapes that meet their specifications and support reliable long-term performance.
