Custom Zinc Die Castings

Zinc alloys are commonly used in industrial applications due to their favorable casting characteristics which include:

  • High density
  • High ductility
  • Good impact training
  • Excellent surface smoothness allowing for painting or plating
  • Requires such coating due to susceptibility to corrosion
  • Easiest to cast to near net shape
  • Can cast very thin walls
  • Low melting point enhances long die life

Common zinc die casting alloys include ASTM AG40A, AC41A, and alloy 7.

Zinc Alloy Casting Applications

Zinc alloys are used for numerous industrial applications including:

  • Housings
  • Plumbing Parts
  • Door Lock Parts and Hardware
  • Gears
  • Bushings/Bearings
  • Pumps Housings and Parts
  • Electrical Light Housings
  • Electrical Cases & Housings
  • All types of Valves, Faucets, and Fittings

Zinc History

In the past zinc die castings were a common method for creating industrial lower cost zinc alloy parts and products. However, over the years, the price of zinc has increased substantially, and with the increases, we have seen a reduction in the use of die cast zinc parts.

In addition to increased price, parts that are produced by the zinc die casting method are considerably heavier than other alloys. In the past, weight was of little concern, but in today’s world, everyone is conscious of the weight of their finished parts. However, due to the drastic increase in price for brass, zinc has taken over as the metal for some of those traditional brass castings, especially plumbing and lock parts.
